Major Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Four grade separations achieved by excavating and sinking the existing rail by up to 7m to pass under newly constructed road bridges.
  • Unprecedented ‘37-day construction blitz’ was undertaken for the three level crossings at Greater North whereby an additional 25-30 surveyors from external contractors were sourced to compliment an existing 1000 personal work crew working a 24/7 hour operation, for thirty seven (37) days straight.
  • This was planned and designed to reduce what normally would have taken eighteen (18) months with conventional construction methodology.
  • Scope required bringing in an additional 35 surveyors over a 24/7, hour day and night operation until project completion and rail corridor was re-opened. Level Crossing Construction Blitz Summary:
  • Machinery used continuously during blitz: 50 Excavators, 15 Dozers, 6 Graders and 6 loaders.
  • Personnel: 1000 people on site each shift.
  • Excavation: 260,000 cubic meters (that’s enough to fill the MCG), excavated and removed from site in ten (10) days.
  • Key Statistic: Largest continuous rail shut down for any project since the construction of the Melbourne underground rail network in the 80’s.
