Greater North Level Crossing.
status
Complete September 2016
Major roles and responsibilities
- Four grade separations achieved by excavating and sinking the existing rail by up to 7m to pass under newly constructed road bridges.
- Unprecedented ‘37-day construction blitz’ was undertaken for the three level crossings at Greater North whereby an additional 25-30 surveyors from external contractors were sourced to compliment an existing 1000 personal work crew working a 24/7 hour operation, for thirty seven (37) days straight.
- This was planned and designed to reduce what normally would have taken eighteen (18) months with conventional construction methodology.
- Scope required bringing in an additional 35 surveyors over a 24/7, hour day and night operation until project completion and rail corridor was re-opened.
- Machinery used continuously during blitz: 50 Excavators, 15 Dozers, 6 Graders and 6 loaders.
- Personnel: 1000 people on site each shift.
- Excavation: 260,000 cubic meters (that’s enough to fill the MCG), excavated and removed from site in ten (10) days.
- Key Statistic: Largest continuous rail shut down for any project since the construction of the Melbourne underground rail network in the 80’s.
